Astana will host the Regional Environmental Summit 2026 in April

The main goal of the summit will be to develop a joint declaration on cooperation in the field of ecology and sustainable development for the countries of Central Asia.

From April 22 to 24, 2026, the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, will host the Regional Environmental Summit (RES). This information was provided by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

It is expected that around 1500 representatives from government structures of the region's countries, international organizations, research institutions, business, and civil society will participate in the event.

The plenary session of the summit will feature speeches by the presidents of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Mongolia, and other high-ranking delegates.

The forum will focus on finding regional solutions to climate and environmental challenges in close cooperation with the United Nations.

The initiative to hold the summit was announced by the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in 2023 and was confirmed at the 80th session in 2025.

Support for RES 2026 is provided by important partners such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the International Energy Agency (IEA), and other well-known global and regional organizations.

The UN General Assembly Resolution 78/147 of December 19, 2023, officially supports this initiative, emphasizing the importance of strengthening regional solidarity to address environmental issues in Central Asia.

The goals of the summit include developing practical solutions and mechanisms that reflect the approach to climate and environmental challenges in the region. Among such issues are the tragedy of the Aral Sea, which has become a symbol of ecological disaster, and the ongoing decline in the level of the Caspian Sea.

The main priorities of the event are identifying the needs of Central Asia for green financing, supporting adaptation measures, developing low-carbon technologies, and strengthening the ecological resilience of the region.

During the summit, a joint declaration by the heads of state of Central Asia on ecology and sustainable development is also planned to be adopted.

Additionally, a regional action program for 2026–2030 will be approved in cooperation with UN agencies, aimed at a sustainable future for Central Asia.

The launch of new environmental projects and initiatives in key areas of the summit is expected.
