China has developed an energy-efficient chip for AI

A group of scientists from Peking University has introduced a new analog chip designed for use in artificial intelligence systems. This chip demonstrates outstanding results, significantly outpacing existing digital solutions, as reported by Kazinform, citing the South China Morning Post.

According to the publication, the developed chip operates 12 times faster than its digital predecessors, while its energy consumption is more than 200 times lower. This discovery could change the perception of how heavily AI systems rely on traditional, energy-intensive digital processors.

The device is not only optimized for simple computations but is also capable of handling complex tasks, such as personalized recommendations and image processing.

The efficiency of the new chip was tested on data volumes comparable to the databases of global platforms like Netflix and Yahoo. During trials focused on media content compression, this chip was able to reduce memory usage by half while maintaining image quality comparable to that achieved through high-precision digital computations.
