According to The Independent, at the beginning of the week, two cases of the disease were confirmed, and later three new cases were identified. Among the infected are healthcare workers, including a doctor and a nurse.

According to a representative of the West Bengal Department of Health, the condition of one of the infected nurses is stabilizing, while the condition of the patient remains critical. Both are under observation in the intensive care unit.

The Nipah virus, according to the World Health Organization, is classified as a high-risk pathogen. Currently, there is no effective treatment. Bats are considered the primary carriers of the virus, and it can also be transmitted through contaminated fruits.

Symptoms include fever, headaches, muscle pain, vomiting, and sore throat. In severe cases, encephalitis may develop, leading to coma within two days. According to WHO, the mortality rate for Nipah virus infection can reach 40–75%.
