The specialists of the Republican Center for Health Strengthening warn that elderly people aged 65 and older are at increased risk of contracting viral diseases, including ARVI and influenza.
To prevent influenza and ARVI infections, it is important to follow several recommendations:
- The most effective way to protect yourself is vaccination against influenza.
- Wash your hands regularly with soap or use antiseptics.
- Maintain distance from people who cough or sneeze.
- Wear masks in public places.
- Ventilate rooms frequently.
- Ensure a balanced diet: eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and dairy products, engage in physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day, ensure you get enough sleep, and avoid stress.
- Avoid self-medication.
Although the illness may manifest in a mild form, serious complications, including fatalities, can sometimes occur.
The main complications include:
- Pneumonia
- Bronchitis
- ENT problems such as otitis, sinusitis, and tracheitis
- Cardiovascular diseases: myocarditis and pericarditis
- Neurological diseases: meningitis, meningoencephalitis, and encephalitis
- Exacerbation of chronic diseases
Why are elderly people more susceptible to infections? With age, the immune system weakens, making them more vulnerable to infections.
Many elderly people suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, which can complicate the course of infections and increase the risk of serious consequences.
How does infection occur?
— The infection is mainly transmitted through airborne droplets during conversation, coughing, or sneezing.
— It can also be contracted through handshakes, hugs, and contact with objects that infected individuals have touched.
The symptoms of the disease may include:
- Fever and chills
- Dry cough
- Shortness of breath
- Chest heaviness
- Runny nose
- Sore throat
- Headaches and muscle aches
- General weakness
In some cases, gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur.
At the first symptoms of the disease, elderly individuals are advised to consult their family doctor for necessary medical assistance.
