How Do Drivers Kill the Engine by Checking the Oil Level?
Some drivers make serious mistakes that can damage the engine. For example, the entry of debris into the engine is one of the most common problems. In the engine compartment of a car, dirt and sand particles usually accumulate. During washing, many car enthusiasts do not open the hood, leaving foreign objects near the oil dipstick.
Contaminants often accumulate around the hole where the oil dipstick is inserted. When removing the dipstick, drivers may inadvertently disturb the dirt without paying proper attention to it. Thus, when the dipstick is returned to its place, unwanted particles can enter the crankcase. It is not wise to rely on the filter to catch these particles — they can damage important engine components, such as the crankshaft journals and cylinder walls. Oil mixed with sand poses a serious challenge for the engine and accelerates its wear.
Another common mistake is the incorrect position of the vehicle when checking the oil. Beginners often do not consider that the car should be on a level surface. If the vehicle is tilted, the driver may not notice that the oil level is actually lower than necessary. As a result, they may postpone adding oil while the engine is already experiencing a shortage.
This can lead to increased friction between working parts, significantly reducing their lifespan. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the vehicle is level, as well as to disengage the transmission and release the brakes. If the car shifts, it is better to choose another location for the check.
Another mistake is the wrong timing for measuring the oil level. Some drivers check the level immediately after starting the engine. This is incorrect, as it can lead to underestimated readings. The correct approach is to measure either after an overnight parking or 15–20 minutes after a drive, when the engine has had time to warm up.
If the engine runs cold for just a few minutes, the oil will remain viscous and will not have time to return to the sump. As a result, the driver may mistakenly believe that they need to add oil. Although overfilling oil is less critical than running low, it can also cause serious problems. Excess oil disrupts the recirculation of crankcase gases and can lead to leaks and damage to the oil pump. Therefore, it is extremely important to ensure that the oil level does not exceed the maximum mark on the dipstick.
Additionally, there is a simple rule: after removing the dipstick, be sure to wipe it with a clean cloth before reinserting it into the oil for an accurate level assessment. And don't forget to check the oil level regularly — at least once a month.
