In Kyrgyzstan, there may be a problem with water shortages in 2026 due to low snow cover levels. This was reported by the First Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, Zhanibek Kerimaliev, at a meeting of the "Mekenchil" parliamentary group on January 30.

Deputy Aisarakan Abdibaeva raised the issue of a possible drought in 2026 and inquired about the measures that would be taken to maintain the water balance. In response, Kerimaliev spoke about the developed plans, which include recommendations for growing agricultural crops that do not require significant water resources. Methods for efficient irrigation, such as drip and sprinkler irrigation, are also provided for the lands designated by government resolution No. 309.

“Accurate data from Kyrghydromet will be provided after February 15, and then the situation will become clearer. However, there is already a noticeable lack of precipitation and low water levels in reservoirs, which may lead to a shortage of water resources,” he added.

Aisarakan Abdibaeva reminded about the water deficit in 2025 and asked whether compensations had been paid to farmers affected by this. Kerimaliev noted that there was no serious deficit that year, and no appeals from farmers had been received by the ministry; the water turnover remained stable.

The readiness of state bodies for spring field work is also being discussed at the meeting of the "Mekenchil" parliamentary group.
