Australian scientists have discovered a shark in the waters of Antarctica for the first time
Scientists from Australia made an unexpected discovery by finding a shark in the waters of Antarctica. The recording was made using a camera mounted on a research device off the coast of the South Shetland Islands at a depth of 490 meters, as reported by the Associated Press.

Researcher Alan Jamieson shared his impressions: “We did not expect to see sharks in this area, as it is believed that they do not occur in Antarctica. And this is not just a small specimen — it is a real giant shark. These creatures are like tanks.”

The shark, measuring 3-4 meters in length, was recorded back in January 2025, but information about it has only just become known.

Previously, it was thought that sharks could not survive in the extreme Antarctic conditions. However, the discovered specimen, likely a polar or sleeper shark, seemed to be quite comfortable.

Scientists suggest that a small population of predators may inhabit this depth, feeding on the remains of whales and giant squids.
