An Australian team of scientists made an unexpected discovery, finding a shark in the waters of the South Shetland Islands, as reported by the Kazinform agency citing AP.
This massive and clumsy fish was moving slowly over the lifeless ocean floor at a significant depth, which came as a real surprise to the researchers.
Previously, experts believed that sharks could not exist in the extremely cold Antarctic waters. However, this predator, which was captured on an underwater camera, became the "elusive" specimen that researcher Alan Jamieson spoke about. The length of the found shark is estimated to be between 3 to 4 meters.
“We did not expect to encounter a shark, as there is an established viewpoint that they are absent in Antarctica,” commented Jamieson.
