In his address to the chairman of the State Committee for National Security (GKNB), Deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh Dastan Bekeshev raised the issue of unblocking TikTok in Kyrgyzstan.

Bekeshev claims that the introduced blockade does not achieve its security-related goals and only creates additional threats for citizens and the country's economy.

In his opinion, TikTok has implemented a number of moderation and content control features, as well as protective mechanisms for users. In case of violations, these tools can be used for targeted actions, such as removing content or accounts, instead of completely blocking access to the platform.

The deputy additionally notes that blocking TikTok does not solve the problem of the spread of potentially dangerous content, as similar materials are also available on other platforms, such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

“The ban on using TikTok effectively leads to an increase in the number of VPN users and other means of circumventing restrictions. This creates additional risks for the informational and personal security of citizens, as many of these services may be unreliable: users do not know how their data is processed and what permissions the application requests,” emphasizes Bekeshev.

Moreover, he points out the importance of TikTok for small businesses and self-employed individuals who use this platform to promote their goods and services, as well as to interact with customers.

“Restricting access to TikTok narrows opportunities for entrepreneurs, increases costs for attracting customers, and worsens competitive conditions, especially for microbusinesses and regional producers. TikTok also serves as a channel for promoting Kyrgyzstan and its tourism potential. Blocking the platform reduces the effectiveness of such efforts, which particularly complicates the work of small tourism projects and local initiatives,” he added.

Bekeshev urged the GKNB to consider the possibility of lifting the blockade and to give appropriate instructions to the Ministry of Digital Development of the Kyrgyz Republic to restore access to TikTok.

We remind you that in May 2024, TikTok was blocked in Kyrgyzstan based on a letter from the GKNB. Unlike the USA and some European countries, where the blockade of the Chinese social network is justified by data security and competition issues, in Kyrgyzstan the decision to block was made due to "harm to children's health."
