According to information provided by The Guardian, Meta Platforms is removing around 550,000 accounts from its social networks Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. This action was taken in the early days following the introduction of new Australian legislation that prohibits access to social networks for individuals under the age of 16. The implementation of age restrictions requires technology companies to disable profiles of minors to avoid severe penalties.

The report shows that from December 4 to December 11, 2025, Meta closed approximately 330,639 accounts on Instagram, 173,497 on Facebook, and 39,916 on Threads that may have violated age restrictions.
While Meta complies with the legislation, company representatives expressed concerns about the difficulty of verifying users' ages and suggested improving collaboration with regulatory authorities.
The new law passed in Australia is considered one of the strictest in the world regarding age restrictions on social media use and has sparked active discussions about its effectiveness and impact on the digital environment for teenagers.
