Celebrations are taking place across the republic in honor of the traditional headwear
On March 5, Kyrgyzstan celebrates the Day of the Ak Kalpak, which has become an important event symbolizing the cultural heritage of the people. This holiday aims to strengthen national traditions and respect for historical past, bringing together thousands of people across the country.
The idea of creating this holiday was proposed in 2011 by director Rysbek Jabirov. Five years later, in 2016, the date was officially approved as a national holiday. An important step in protecting this symbol was the introduction of a special law in 2019 that regulates the use of the ak kalpak, prohibiting its disrespectful use, such as being treated as a bath item.
In 2019, another significant event occurred: the tradition of making and wearing the ak kalpak was included in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. This white felt headwear, whose shape resembles the snowy peaks of the Tien Shan mountains, has become a recognized object of world heritage.
Festive and educational events are organized in various parts of the country. For example, a youth forum titled "Ak Kalpak — Kyrgyz Heritage" will be held at the K. Karasaev BGU.
