At the winter fair "Karakol Winter Fair 2026," a demonstration of the elechek was held, organized by artisans from the Jeti-Oguz region, attracting the attention of visitors.

This part of the event, dedicated to the national headdress, became one of the most memorable.

During the show, the craftswomen dressed anyone who wished to wear the elechek and provided detailed information about its history, significance, and rules of wearing it. Participants watched with interest as they learned how to properly wrap and wear this headdress.

Gülbary Shadakova, one of the mothers from Jeti-Oguz, noted that for three years she and her like-minded peers have been actively working to preserve the traditions of wearing the Kyrgyz elechek for future generations.

“Previously, to create an elechek, fabric measuring 40 to 45 meters was used, but now we only use 18 meters. With each wrap of the fabric, women express good wishes. Each wrap must be neat and even, as it was once said: ‘sharp as a knife blade.’ We continue this tradition and encourage women to wear the elechek at cultural events,” she explained.

“In the upper part of this headdress, women kept small items. The elechek was also indispensable in nomadic life. For example, it was used for swaddling children. Additionally, in emergency situations, it could serve as a tablecloth, and in a nomadic lifestyle, it was used for bandaging wounds of the injured,” the craftswomen from Jeti-Oguz revealed.

They also shared interesting customs related to the elechek. One belief states that if there is a misunderstanding in the family, it must be resolved before the elechek dries after washing.

“The elechek dries quickly in the sun,” the women added.

Their main goal is to promote the history, culture, and spiritual values of the Kyrgyz people through the elechek.
