From Bishkek to Europe: how a Kyrgyz woman is building a career in IT in Germany
In 2022, Aigerim Asankirimova, a native of Bishkek, decided to move to Germany, where she trained as a programmer and now works as an IT consultant. She settled in a small town located at the crossroads of Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, and her office is on a street that effectively divides these two countries.

In an interview with 24.kg, Aigerim shared her experience of living abroad, as well as her thoughts on the positive and negative aspects of this choice.

— Start by telling us about yourself...

— I was born in Bishkek, but our family heritage comes from Issyk-Kul. After finishing school, I decided to take an academic year for self-discovery and simultaneously began studying programming and German. I spent six months in Ethiopia, where my mother worked as a doctor. Upon returning to Kyrgyzstan, I applied for a visa and continued learning the language, and as soon as I received permission, I left for Germany.

— What motivated you to study abroad? Which countries did you consider?

— I have always wanted to go to Europe, but I understood that my mother would not be able to cover all the expenses. So I needed to find a country where I could study and earn at the same time. My cousin, who lives in Germany, told me about such opportunities, and I decided to learn more about the country. Germany became not just a dream for me, but a conscious choice.

— How did you adapt to life in Germany? What was the most difficult part?

— The adaptation was not easy. I found myself in a purely German environment without acquaintances. From day one, I had to immerse myself in a new society. Several times during the first year, I felt like giving up, but my goal — to get a job and build my life — helped me move forward.

The hardest part was finding close people. Germans do not open up quickly, and at first, it was very lonely, especially under the gray sky.

— How did you find the strength to continue when difficulties arose?

— My main motivation is a clear goal: to grow, earn, and provide a better life for my mother. She has always believed in me and supported me at every step, working for the family in another country. I feel immense gratitude, and that feeling is stronger than the desire to give up.

Additionally, the support of my best friends and therapy helped me cope with apathy during tough times. I am grateful to all these people!

— What pros and cons of living in Germany can you highlight?

— One of the main advantages is the Ausbildung program, which allows you to receive an education while working simultaneously.

A disadvantage is the difficulty of integrating into German society, which should be accepted in advance.

There was no cultural shock; rather, I was surprised at how locals can eat bread with cheese all day, considering it a full meal, while I am used to the diverse Kyrgyz cuisine.

— What is Ausbildung and how to prepare for it?

— Ausbildung is a combination of education and work. Over three years, you acquire a profession while working in that field, receiving a salary or stipend. Upon completion, you become a fully qualified specialist with experience.

To start, it is important to know the German language. Most employers require a level of at least B1, and many require B2 or higher. Language is fundamental; without it, nothing is possible.

— What are your professional responsibilities? Was it easy to find a job? Is competition high?

— I work as an IT consultant and project manager. My responsibilities include negotiating with clients, mainly banks, identifying their needs, overseeing product development, and training client teams.

I completed my Ausbildung at the same company where I currently work, and I was offered a permanent position immediately after my studies. Finding a place for Ausbildung is generally not difficult, but it is important to present yourself in a way that makes the employer want to keep you after graduation.

— Do you encounter biased opinions about women in IT?

— I have not encountered serious stereotypes, although in a group of 22 people, there were 19 guys and only 3 girls. At work, it was said that women in this field are rare, but with respect and joy.

— You offer help to girls from Kyrgyzstan who want to move to Germany. Why is this important to you?

— I want to help because I have gone through all the difficulties myself: loneliness, doubts, the desire to return. I know what it’s like when there’s no one to turn to for support. Previously, I helped acquaintances with documents, and now I am ready to provide full support. If you are reading this and thinking, “What if I can do it?” — yes, you can. I am an example of that.

— What advice would you give to those who want to move to Germany?

— Start learning the language right now, even if you don’t have the opportunity to enroll in courses. There are many free resources on the internet. You will have to overcome your own doubts and laziness, but it is worth the effort.

— How do you spend your free time?

— Recently, I have taken up swimming; it helps me relax. I meet with loved ones, watch series, and read. During vacations, I definitely travel. I have learned to appreciate the simple joys of life.

— How do you see your life in five years?

— I hope to continue developing my career, move to a more spacious apartment, get a cat, and definitely go on a trip with my family. My mother deserves to see the world alongside me.

In conclusion, I want to say that the main thing is to keep moving towards your goal, even when it seems like nothing is working out. Believe in yourself!
