The authorities of Kyrgyzstan announced the start of negotiations with the European Union following reports of possible sanctions against the country due to its support for Russia.
First Deputy Prime Minister Daniyar Amangeldiev stated in an interview with "Azattyk" that an online meeting with David O’Sullivan, the EU Commissioner for Sanctions, is expected in the coming days.
Amangeldiev emphasized that there are no official confirmations of intentions to impose sanctions against Kyrgyzstan, and the information that served as the basis for discussions was presented by a foreign publication without sufficient evidence. He also noted that Kyrgyzstan has already imposed restrictions on the export of dual-use goods, including weapons, and sees no reason for measures against its country.
Furthermore, he added that the discussed restrictions may not be so much about sanctions against Kyrgyzstan as recommendations for some EU countries to cease the supply of certain goods to the republic.
On January 30, the Bloomberg agency reported that the European Union is considering the possibility of imposing restrictive measures against Kyrgyzstan. This is being discussed in the context of a new package of EU sanctions against Russia, which is related to the war in Ukraine and measures against circumventing the sanctions regime through third countries.
According to the agency, possible new restrictions could affect financial institutions, oil companies, as well as cryptocurrency services in countries that the EU believes are assisting Russia in circumventing sanctions.
