The Kazakh government has allocated 1.1 billion tenge for the rescue of the Caspian Sea, which is equivalent to 2.2 million dollars. The signature on the relevant decree for the allocation of funds from the state reserve was put by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektanov.
The main beneficiary of these funds will be the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of the Caspian Sea. The money received will be used to modernize the institute's technical equipment, including the purchase of modern equipment for marine research and the creation of laboratories for hydrobiology and hydrochemistry. This will allow researchers to conduct comprehensive studies in the sea's waters, tracking changes in biological and meteorological indicators.
The situation with the Caspian Sea has become particularly urgent due to its rapid shallowing. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking at the UN podium, called what is happening a "global alarm signal" and expressed concerns about a possible ecological disaster.
To address this issue, Kazakhstan plans to establish a Water Resources Analysis Center in Astana under the auspices of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. A major regional environmental conference dedicated to the protection of the Caspian Sea is also scheduled to take place in the capital of the republic in April 2026.
