The Government of Kazakhstan allocated over $2 million to study the causes of the Caspian Sea's shallowing

The allocated funds will help improve the scientific capabilities of the institute. They will be used to purchase equipment necessary for marine monitoring, as well as to equip hydrobiological and hydrochemical laboratories. This will allow for comprehensive monitoring in the sea's waters, including systematic observations of hydrometeorological and biological parameters, which will expand the scientific data base on the processes occurring in the Kazakh part of the Caspian Sea, the statement notes.

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources will be instructed to take all necessary measures to implement this resolution, while the Ministry of Finance has been tasked with strictly monitoring the targeted use of budget funds.

Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking at the UN last September, called on the international community for joint actions to protect the Caspian Sea, emphasizing its rapid shallowing, which represents a "global alarm signal," not just a regional problem.

Tokayev also regularly raises the issue of the situation with the Caspian Sea at international forums. At the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, he stated that the shallowing of the sea "is approaching an ecological disaster."

In this regard, the president proposed to establish a Water Problems Analysis Center in Astana under the auspices of the SCO and announced plans to hold a regional environmental summit in Astana in April 2026.
