The official opening of the "Francophonie - 2026" festival took place in Bishkek, which this year is held under the motto "Women and Francophonie." The evening began with a performance by French pianist Christine Fonlupt, who arrived specifically from Paris.
High-profile guests attended the ceremony, including the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of France to Kyrgyzstan Nicolas Fay, the Ambassador of the European Union to the Kyrgyz Republic Remi Duflo, the Ambassador of Switzerland to Kyrgyzstan Siroko Messerli, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Information, Sports, and Youth Policy of the Kyrgyz Republic Askar Madaminov, as well as the President of the French Alliance in Bishkek Guzel Ishenova.
Opening the evening, Nicolas Fay emphasized that Francophonie is not just an abstract concept, but a real phenomenon. According to him, the French language ranks fourth in the world in terms of prevalence, with about 400 million speakers.
The ambassador noted that interest in learning the French language continues to grow:
- It is the second most popular foreign language, studied by about 170 million people. It is particularly encouraging that among them are the youth of Kyrgyzstan — schoolchildren and students present here today.
Fay also expressed gratitude to the teachers:
- Thanks to your efforts, the French language remains relevant and in demand.
Regarding the theme of the festival, he emphasized:
- This year we focus on women, their role in art and society, as well as in shaping hope for the future.
The Ambassador of the European Union Remi Duflo was inspired by the poetry of Alphonse de Lamartine, stating:
- Let me remind you of the lines: "Will we never be able to drop anchor for at least one day?" These words reflect the time that swiftly carries us forward.
He added:
- But in these words, there is also a call to stop, to hear each other, and to reflect on what is happening. This tension between moving forward and the desire to preserve a moment is the foundation of any culture.
In his opinion, Francophonie and the European project strive to unite different cultures while preserving their uniqueness and creating space for dialogue.
He emphasized the importance of openness:
- In a world that often tends towards isolation, it is especially important to maintain curiosity and respect for differences, as well as a willingness to engage in dialogue.
The Ambassador of Switzerland Siroko Messerli noted the symbolism of the current year:
- For Switzerland, 2026 is significant, as 30 years ago, in 1996, we became part of the International Organization of Francophonie.
He added:
- For us, Francophonie is much more than a language. It is a space where cultural, scientific, and political connections develop, where respect and knowledge exchange are important.
According to him, Francophonie unites more than 80 countries:
- It is a dynamic community based on the values of diversity, dialogue, and innovation.
He also presented Switzerland's cultural program:
- This year we plan a tasting of Swiss wines, a fashion show, and musical events, as culture is the best means of communication.
The Deputy Minister of Culture, Information, Sports, and Youth Policy of the Kyrgyz Republic Askar Madaminov emphasized the importance of the festival:
- I congratulate everyone on the opening of Francophonie. This festival unites peoples through culture, language, and shared values.
He noted the role of art in strengthening ties:
- Through such events, cultural connections between states develop.
Madaminov also highlighted the symbolism of the concert's opening:
- Music is a universal language understood by all without translation. Christine Fonlupt's performance is an opportunity to touch high European art.
He added that a similar concert by the French pianist will take place in Osh.
The President of the French Alliance in Bishkek Guzel Ishenova focused on this year's theme:
- This year, Francophonie is dedicated to women who successfully balance career and family, remaining a source of strength and inspiration.
She invited Kyrgyzstanis to learn the French language:
- The doors of the French Alliance are always open. The French language is the language of culture and opportunities.
The highlight of the evening was Christine Fonlupt's performance, who presented a program dedicated to French classical music.
Her performance was characterized by a delicate interpretation and deep emotionality, the concert took place in a full hall and was warmly received by the audience, setting a high artistic standard for the entire festival.
Francophonie-2026 will continue in Bishkek and Osh with a series of cultural, educational, and creative events uniting different countries and cultures.
