
In August 2026, Mongolia will host the preliminary qualifying matches of Group D for the 2029 Asian Basketball Championship.
Four teams will participate in this tournament: Mongolia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Fiji. The competitions will take place from August 24 to September 1, 2026, and will determine which teams will continue the fight for advancement to the second stage of qualification.
The main goal of this preliminary qualifying tournament will be to select teams for advancement to the second stage of qualification for the FIBA Asia Cup, and then to the main continental tournament and international competitions. Of all the participants in the group stage, the three most successful teams will be able to advance further.
Kyrgyzstan has joined Group B and will compete against teams from Kazakhstan, Palestine, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.

Mongolia has significant experience in organizing major international basketball events. Since 2022, the country has hosted important FIBA tournaments, including preliminary qualifying matches for the Asia Cup, the qualifying round of the Women's Asia Championship, the FIBA U16 Asia Cup 2025, and the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2025.
Additionally, Mongolia has hosted club competitions such as the Final Four of the Asian Champions League and East 2025. These events highlight Mongolia's growing reputation as a reliable organizer of both continental and global basketball tournaments.
