“America the Beautiful” is a well-known patriotic song of the USA. The music, composed by amateur composer Samuel Ward in the 1880s, was adapted to secular lyrics by the lesser-known author Katharine Lee Bates in the early 20th century. Since then, starting in the 1930s, the popularity of this song has significantly increased, and it has become one of the most beloved songs in the USA.
In 1882, Ward created the music for the text of the Protestant hymn "O Mother dear, Jerusalem," written by Scottish theologian David Dixon in the 17th century. Later, in 1904, Ward's song was revised to fit the secular poem by K. Bates "Pikes Peak" (1895), and the third version, now known as America the Beautiful, appeared in her collection in 1912.
Since 1929, the song has become widely popular across the country. Currently, "America the Beautiful" is considered one of the most beloved patriotic songs in the USA, and at various times, especially during the presidency of J.F. Kennedy, there were discussions about the possibility of replacing The Star-Spangled Banner with this song as the national anthem.
