According to information provided by DW, human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced to 7.5 years in prison in Iran. She became a Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2023.
Mohammadi was arrested on December 12, 2025, during a mourning ceremony for human rights lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. On February 2, 2026, she began a hunger strike in protest. As a result, on February 8, the court sentenced her to six years in prison for "participation in assemblies and conspiracy to commit crimes," as well as 1.5 years for propaganda. Additionally, after her release, she will be banned from leaving the country for two years and will be required to reside in the city of Khusf.
According to her lawyer Mostafa Nili, the human rights activist was hospitalized due to deteriorating health but was soon returned to prison. He hopes that her condition will allow for temporary release on bail to receive necessary treatment.
Narges Mohammadi holds the position of Vice President of the Center for Human Rights Defenders in Iran. Over the past two decades, she has been repeatedly arrested for her active stance against the regime and her human rights work. In total, she has been arrested 13 times, and her total prison sentence, excluding the latest verdict, amounts to 31 years, of which she has already spent ten years in prison.
In particular, in 2021, she was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison and 80 lashes for "anti-state propaganda." In December 2024, Mohammadi was temporarily released for health reasons for three weeks, but this period was extended.
Supporters of Mohammadi note that during her imprisonment, she has suffered several heart attacks, and in 2022, she underwent emergency surgery. At the end of 2024, her lawyer reported that she had a bone formation, which was later removed.
