
In December 2025, significant temperature anomalies were observed in Kazakhstan. As a result, several regions recorded new records, including one that had stood since 1978, as reported by Tengrinews.kz.
According to Kazhydromet, warm weather conditions reminiscent of November were observed in the country at the beginning of December. Precipitation occurred in the form of rain and snow, and blizzards, fogs, and gusty winds were also recorded.
Abnormal warmth in early December
On December 1, several regions recorded abnormally high temperatures. In Kostanay, the thermometer rose to +4.8 degrees, surpassing the record set in 2021. In Petropavlovsk, the temperature was +2.6 degrees, exceeding the previous maximum from 2009.
In Zhezkazgan, records were broken from December 2 to 4: +6.0 degrees (previous record from 2021 — +5.9), +7.7 degrees (previous record from 1990 — +7.2), and +5.9 degrees (previous record from 2016 — +4.3).
The onset of winter
From December 8 to 12, a sharp drop in temperature occurred across the country. Thanks to a northern anticyclone, the temperature fell from 0-5 degrees to -18-26 degrees, marking the arrival of winter conditions.
Record that stood since 1978
In the second half of December, warmth returned to Kazakhstan. On December 15, a temperature of +2.2 degrees was recorded in Astana, surpassing the record from 1981 (+2.0), while in Petropavlovsk, the temperature was -1.1 degrees, which also exceeded the record from 2005 (-1.5).
On December 29, the temperature in Shymkent reached +19.4 degrees, breaking the record from 2023 (+15.5). In Turkestan, the thermometer rose to +14.1 degrees, also higher than the maximum from 1995 (+12.2).
On December 30, Astana recorded +2.8 degrees (record from 1995 — +1.8), while in Zhezkazgan, it was +1.3 degrees (record from 2001 — +1.1).
On December 31, in Ust-Kamenogorsk, the temperature reached +6.3 degrees, setting a new record that exceeded the figure from 1978 (+4.8), which had stood for 47 years.
Overall results of the month
Overall, December 2025 in Kazakhstan was warmer than the climatic norm by 1-4 degrees. In some regions, the amount of precipitation exceeded the average monthly figures by 1.3-6 times, while in other areas, the precipitation was within the norm or even less.
It is worth noting that in November 2025, abnormally warm weather was also observed in most regions of Kazakhstan. For example, in Karaganda, a maximum of +9.4 degrees was recorded, breaking a 54-year-old record.
