According to RIA Novosti, only about 10% of marine inhabitants are known to humanity.
When asked about the number of animal species living in the ocean, scientists cannot provide an exact answer. Experts suggest that we are familiar with only 10-20% of all marine creatures,” noted Andrey Gebruk, Doctor of Biological Sciences and head of the ocean bottom fauna laboratory at the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
He added that in reality, the percentage of known species is likely closer to 10.
“In my observations, about 10% of marine species that exist have been recorded and described by us. This is very little,” he concluded.
