In Brazil, 30 people died and 39 are missing due to heavy rains

As a result of heavy rains in southeastern Brazil, specifically in the cities of Juiz de Fora and Ubá, 30 people have died and 39 are missing. The evacuation affected 440 residents, and a state of emergency has been declared in the affected areas, according to Reuters.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences on his social media account on X, emphasizing that one of the main tasks of the authorities is "to provide humanitarian aid, restore social services, support the evacuated, and assist in recovery."

According to Reuters, Brazil experiences a rainy season from December to March, characterized by frequent downpours, flooding, and landslides. However, in February 2026, the level of precipitation in the southern and eastern states exceeded normal levels. For the city of Juiz de Fora, this month has become the rainiest in its history.
