A digital som is scheduled to be launched in Kyrgyzstan starting January 1, 2027. This was announced by the Deputy Chairman of the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic, Azat Kozubekov, at a press conference on February 24.
Kozubekov specified that the law regarding the creation of the digital som will come into effect on the specified date, allowing this currency to begin circulation. Currently, the National Bank is actively working on the implementation of this project in collaboration with partners.
According to the information, the digital som represents a digital version of the national currency, which will be issued by the National Bank. This type of currency will be a legal means of payment, and one digital som will be equivalent to one cash som. Since the digital currency will be backed by the regulator's guarantees, there is a provision for the recovery of funds.
Additionally, Kozubekov stated that more information about the progress of the pilot project will be provided during the current year, which remains one of the priority areas for the regulator.
