On February 2, 2026, during a meeting of the committee on agricultural policy, water resources, subsoil use, ecology, and environmental protection, Deputy Bakyt Tentishev raised the issue of the intention to switch the Bishkek heat and power plant (HPP) to gas. He expressed concern for the residents who fear an increase in heating prices following such a transition.

Mayor of the capital Aibek Junushaliev confirmed that if the HPP is switched to gas, it will indeed lead to an increase in heating tariffs.
“Switching the Bishkek HPP to gas will result in significant expenses for the citizens. Gas tariffs will rise,” noted the mayor.

He also added that the current equipment at the HPP is outdated and loses almost 50% of heat before reaching the end users. In this context, the mayor reported on ongoing work towards decentralization, which may lead to a reduction in heating tariffs in the future.

The meeting also discussed a draft resolution of the Jogorku Kenesh regarding the environmental situation related to smog.
