- At a press briefing on February 10, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Kyrgyzstan, Sergey Vakunov, addressed issues of energy cooperation between Russia and Kyrgyzstan.

According to Vakunov, the interest of Russian investors in the economy of Kyrgyzstan is growing, as evidenced by the successful implementation of two major energy projects: a solar power plant with a capacity of 300 MW and a wind farm with a capacity of 100 MW.

“We understand the concerns of Kyrgyzstan and take into account its needs related to electricity supply and water resources,” the ambassador emphasized.

He also noted that among the priorities for cooperation are projects in the field of hydropower, including the participation of Russian investors in the construction of small hydropower plants.

In the opinion of the Russian side, to address the issue of electricity shortages in Kyrgyzstan, the construction of a small nuclear power plant could be considered.

“This issue is currently under consideration. The decision, of course, remains with the Kyrgyz Republic; however, it is worth noting that neighbors Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are already moving in this direction. This will allow for the acquisition of clean energy, support the water balance in the region, and reduce electricity prices,” added Vakunov.

In 2026, Kyrgyzstan will conduct an assessment of its readiness to implement nuclear energy across 19 areas, using the methodology of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
