Berikbayev pointed out that in recent years there has been an increase in attacks on atheists and people who do not belong to any religion. Ulysmedia.kz reports that such insults and accusations of a lack of morality often go unanswered, which is a worrying signal for society.
The religious scholar also provided a specific example. A lecturer from the Islamic University "Nur-Mubarak" during his public speech compared atheists to animals, claiming that non-believers are incapable of distinguishing between good and evil. This is a clear violation of human dignity.
— When dehumanization comes from individuals with academic and religious reputations (such as a PhD doctor), the consequences can be particularly serious, — noted Berikbayev.
He emphasizes that the authorities must protect the dignity of all citizens, regardless of their beliefs. Atheism does not pose a threat to traditions; it is one form of worldview. Therefore, a law or amendments to existing legislation are necessary to ensure the protection of non-religious Kazakhs from insults and attacks.
— If we truly adhere to the principles of a secular state, we must guarantee equal legal and social protection for all, regardless of their attitude towards religion. A law that protects the feelings and dignity of atheists will not be directed against religions or believers. This will be a step towards real equality, respect for human dignity, and a reduction in conflicts based on worldview, — concluded Elnar Berikbayev.
