The Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations Azamat Mambetov noted at a briefing in Bishkek on February 13 that approximately 16% of glaciers in Kyrgyzstan have melted over the past 50-60 years.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, the average temperature on the planet has increased by 1.9 degrees, leading to significant glacier melting. This, in turn, has contributed to the formation of high-altitude lakes, which pose a breach hazard. Currently, there are about 2000 such lakes in the country, of which approximately 600 are classified as highly dangerous — their breach could threaten settlements located below.

Mambetov also cited examples of recent breach incidents. In 2024, the breach of the Western Zyndan Lake occurred in the Ton district of the Issyk-Kul region. Last year, the Takyr-Tor Lake breached twice, resulting in the evacuation of about a thousand people and road closures.

The Deputy Minister emphasized that the glacier melting process continues and intensifies each year, leading to increased water flows and the formation of new lakes with a high risk of breach.
