At the meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh Committee on Agricultural Policy on March 16, the issue of reducing the area of green spaces per resident in Bishkek was discussed.

Deputy Azizbek Tursunbaev pointed out that Bishkek was once considered one of the greenest cities, but currently, the situation leaves much to be desired.

He noted that the city often practices deep pruning of trees, which negatively affects their aesthetic appearance and functionality.

“Every four to five meters, you are pruning trees. I have not seen anything like this anywhere in the world. What is the point of this?” the deputy expressed his bewilderment.

In response, the Deputy Mayor of Bishkek, Ramiz Aliyev, stated that until recently, there were about 16 square meters of green spaces per resident, but now this figure has dropped to approximately 4 square meters.

He explained that sanitary pruning of trees is practiced in the city, especially regarding poplars, which begin to deteriorate when the upper part dries out.

“There are two types of pruning: deep and light. When the top of the poplar starts to dry out, we prune that part specifically,” he added.

The deputy also emphasized that it is more reasonable to remove old trees and replace them with new ones.
