On February 6, a serious incident occurred on the South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb: users were mistakenly credited with bitcoins totaling approximately $44 billion, according to reports from foreign news agencies.

The error occurred during a promotional campaign, during which some customers received thousands of bitcoins in their accounts instead of the expected bonus of 2,000 Korean won. This mistake affected several hundred accounts.

Immediately after the incident, the exchange took measures by suspending withdrawals and trading for the affected users. It is reported that most of the mistakenly transferred funds have already been returned, as customers did not have time to withdraw them.

Bithumb clarified that the issue is not related to a cyberattack or hacking, but was caused by a technical error within the system. Financial regulators in South Korea have launched an investigation to determine the details of what happened.

This failure caused temporary fluctuations in the price of bitcoin on the local market and raised questions about the reliability of control systems on centralized cryptocurrency exchanges.
