In Bishkek, the municipal enterprise "Bishkek City Transport" has announced a tender for the demolition of trolleybus poles. The total contract amount will be 12 million 46 thousand soms, as reported by Bermet Borubaeva, one of the founders of the initiative group #BishkekSmog.
According to the activist, earlier representatives of the capital's financial management of the Ministry of Finance claimed that the local budget would not incur expenses for transferring 100 trolleybuses to other cities. Nevertheless, the actual costs for dismantling the infrastructure will be covered by municipal funds.
The fate of the dismantled elements, including the expensive electrical wires, remains an open question. As of mid-2024, the length of the contact lines in Bishkek is 210 km. The cost of laying one kilometer of trolleybus contact network ranges from 170 to 400 thousand dollars depending on the region and construction conditions, largely due to the high price of copper.
It is worth reminding that the city hall has decided to eliminate trolleybuses as a mode of public transport in the city. However, according to the new General Plan, the municipality intends to lay tram lines in Bishkek.
