Breeding cattle will help reduce pasture degradation in Kyrgyzstan — Ministry of Agriculture

The key aspect of combating pasture degradation in Kyrgyzstan has been not the increase in livestock numbers, but the improvement of its quality. This was stated by Zhanibek Kerimaliev, the First Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Food Industry of the country, during the Ala-Too Live program, where the upcoming agro-industrial forum "Agrodialog-2026" was also discussed.

The Ministry of Agriculture emphasized that pasture degradation remains a serious problem. According to experts, the introduction of high-yield breeding livestock can reduce the load on pastures by up to 5%. This means that keeping a smaller number of more productive livestock, both meat and dairy, can be more profitable from both an economic and environmental perspective.

As part of these efforts, high-quality breeding seeds of breeds such as Aberdeen Angus, Simmental, and Swedish breeds have been imported into the country. The seed material has been distributed among farmers with the help of veterinary and technical specialists, and consulting support is also provided as part of the breeding livestock development program.

After the autumn season, an analysis of the growth and productivity of the new breeds is planned, which will allow for the evaluation of the effectiveness of this project. The Ministry emphasizes that the development of breeding livestock is a strategic step aimed at protecting pastures and improving the economic efficiency of agriculture.
