Temirkul Duyshobaev, a veteran of the Afghan war and a resident of the village of Keng-Suu, located in the Tyup district of the Issyk-Kul region, celebrated his 68th birthday this year and is currently retired.

He shared his memories of how, after finishing school and obtaining a driver's diploma, he ended up in the army.

“I was born in 1958 and worked at the state farm 'Santas' for six months after school. In 1978, I was drafted into service among the young soldiers of the USSR. I spent the first six months in the Far East, in the Chita region of Russia. By 1979, the war in Afghanistan had begun, and we, unaware of this, were sent to the front. We learned about our assignment only on the train while traveling through the Kazakh steppe. We were strictly warned against correspondence with our families,” the veteran recounted.

According to him, soldiers were preparing for war right on the train. After a week of training in Kushka (Turkmenistan), they were sent to their deployment location in Shindand, which is situated between Herat and Kabul. From February to November 1980, his group carried out various tasks, including transporting construction materials and building barracks. Temirkul fulfilled his duties as a driver.

Unfortunately, there were soldiers who lost their lives, and their bodies were sent back home. After nine months of service, he returned home, and his family learned about his participation in the war only a year and a half later. “I was at war in Afghanistan, and no one knew about my return,” Duyshobaev noted.

Upon returning, he started a family and began working in the Tyup district electric networks.

Every year on February 15, he commemorates it as a day of remembrance, a day of respect for all participants of the war.

“After my service, I got a job in the district electric networks, servicing areas up to Karkyra, Chaar-Kuduk, Tasm, and Toktoyan. Together with my wife, I raised four sons and two daughters. Now we are enjoying our well-deserved retirement and are happy with our 12 grandchildren. We also engage in agriculture,” he added.
