Week-24. Officials went on a pilgrimage, while Bishkek continues to lose its history
In Kyrgyzstan, the New Year holidays are coming to an end, and during this time the republic celebrated two significant events – New Year and Christmas. We hope you made good use of this time. In this review, we will talk about the events that took place in the second week of January.

Starting from January 14, 2026, new financial control rules will come into effect in Kyrgyzstan. Exchange offices will now be required to check documents and sources of funds for clients, including foreigners, when conducting large or suspicious transactions. This decision by the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic is aimed at combating money laundering, and exchange points will be required to store transaction information for five years.

While the country is recovering from the New Year holidays, a group of high-profile officials went on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. Among the pilgrims was the head of the State National Security Committee, Kamchybek Tashiev, who performed rituals alongside the presidential chief of staff, Kanaybek Tumanbaev, and former mufti Maksatbek aji Toktomushev.

Also among the pilgrims was the chairman of the Tax Service, Almambet Shykmamotov, who spoke about religion. He emphasized that true faith is an internal path to mercy and responsibility, not a way to attract attention or a reason for disputes.

Meanwhile, President Sadyr Japarov reiterated the necessity of transitioning to a 12-year school education system as a prerequisite for the country. According to him, the population growth of 500,000 people over the decade has led to a shortage of educational places, and the new education system will help integrate graduates into the global labor market without additional training.

In Bishkek, on Razzakov Street, 24, which intersects with Chokmorova, a historic building was demolished. At the beginning of January, activists noticed preparatory work, which was later confirmed by urban defender Iskander Burkanov. He reported that the building had been removed from the architectural heritage registry back in 2018. The process was carried out "in accordance with the law": the residents of the building appealed to the city hall to recognize the object as emergency. One of the owners had been working for several years to remove the building from the list of heritage sites, then bought out all the apartments and became the sole owner of the plot.

After this, the Deputy Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Edil Baisalov, stated: "We need to reconsider the visa-free regime for U.S. citizens in light of the new visa requirements announced by the State Department." He noted that visa policy should be based on principles of reciprocity and respect. "If such high barriers are set for our citizens, we cannot remain indifferent," the official added.
