The Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic has decided to completely concrete the Big Chui Canal (BCC) in order to reduce water losses used for irrigating land. This was reported by Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, during a meeting of the committee of the Jogorku Kenesh, which deals with agricultural policy and water resources.

Torobaev responded to the remark of Deputy Azizbek Tursunbaev that current water losses in the BCC reach 40-50 percent. The deputy called for necessary measures to clean and concrete the canal, as this water is important for the entire Chui region.

According to the minister, the BCC is divided into two parts: the eastern part, which starts in Kemin and passes through the territory of the Chui region, and the western part, which flows through Bishkek.

“We have plans for the complete concreting of the BCC. We plan to attract 23 million dollars from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for 12.5 kilometers of concrete coverage. We are also seeking funding from the budget and the Asian Development Bank for the concreting of a total of 100 kilometers,” noted Bakyt Torobaev.

Additionally, the minister added that the government intends to build 106 reservoirs. “Work on the repair of the remaining reservoirs from the Soviet era is ongoing,” he concluded.
