Republicans, who control the Florida House of Representatives, have supported a proposal to rename Palm Beach International Airport in honor of Donald Trump, the former President of the United States. This was reported by The Palm Beach Post.

Meg Weinberger, a co-sponsor of the bill and representative of Palm Beach County, noted that the president deserves such an honor since his residence is located just five miles from the airport. Republican Kim Kendall, who also supports the initiative and has experience as an air traffic controller, added that Trump deserves recognition for the investments in airport infrastructure upgrades made by his administration last year. Representative John Snyder from Stuart stated that renaming the airport would make it "truly great."

Weinberger clarified that lawmakers did not consult with Trump's company when developing the initiative, while the Trump family agreed to waive rights to use his name for the airport.

According to the Senate budget bill, $2.75 million will be allocated for replacing signs and other elements of the airport's infrastructure in West Palm Beach. The airport serves about 8.6 million passengers annually.

Democrats, on the other hand, believe that the renaming should be postponed until Trump's presidential term is completed. They pointed to his past, including two impeachments and 34 indictments in New York related to document falsification. However, the opposition's opinion did not influence the decision of the Florida House of Representatives.
