At a press conference in Tokyo, Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takichi announced the early dissolution of the lower house of parliament. This was reported by the Nikkei newspaper.

Japan is facing its second extraordinary election for the lower house of parliament in the last year and a half, scheduled for February 8. The deputies will be dissolved on January 23.

Sanae Takichi and her team are hoping for public support, as she is the first woman to hold the position of Prime Minister of Japan.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the decision on who should lead the government should be made by the country's population.

It is important to note that Sanae Takichi took office as head of government in the fall of 2025 as a result of parliamentary voting, rather than through general elections, following the resignation of Shigeru Ishiba.

Thus, she decided to seek a popular mandate, within which the Prime Minister promised a more active defense policy, increased government spending, and investments to stimulate economic growth, enhance tax revenues, and stabilize the budget.
