Iranian boats attempted to intercept an American tanker in the Strait of Hormuz
According to information provided by the U.S. military, the tanker was surrounded by armed boats belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). These boats threatened to board the oil tanker Stena Imperative in the waters of the strait.
According to U.S. Central Command data, the destroyer McFaul soon arrived at the scene and, with air support, escorted the tanker to safety, after which the vessel continued on its way.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically important maritime route that plays a key role in the transportation of oil and gas. It is the only waterway from the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean. In 2024, approximately 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products passed through the strait daily, accounting for about 20% of global consumption and over 25% of all maritime oil trade.
