
On her page on the social network X, Kaja Kallas stated: “The EU foreign ministers have just made an important decision, declaring the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization.” She also emphasized that “the regime that kills thousands of citizens is heading towards its own downfall.”
During the meeting, new sanctions against Iran were approved, affecting 15 high-ranking officials in the fields of security and justice, as well as six legal entities.
Kallas added that these measures are aimed at those involved in the brutal suppression of protests that erupted in the country at the end of last year due to economic difficulties.
In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi characterized the EU's decision as “a significant strategic mistake.” He noted that while some countries are trying to prevent conflict in the region, Europe, on the contrary, is “fanning the flames.”
Official data indicates that over 3,000 people have died as a result of the protests; however, according to Time magazine, citing sources in the Ministry of Health, the number of victims may reach 30,000. It is difficult to establish the exact number of casualties due to the unstable internet situation in the country.
The Revolutionary Guard Corps is an elite unit of the Iranian Armed Forces, tasked with protecting the principles of the Islamic Revolution from internal and external threats.
The IRGC has already been designated a terrorist organization in the USA, Australia, and Canada.
