
According to the Cuban Ministry of the Interior, when the country's coast guard attempted to approach the vessel, shots were fired from the boat. In response, the Cuban vessel returned fire, resulting in the deaths of four individuals on the American boat.
Cuban border guards also injured six people. There were five crew members on board their vessel. The Ministry of the Interior noted that the shots were fired when their boat moved closer to the Florida-registered vessel for passenger identification. The captain of the Cuban vessel was also injured in this incident.
The statement said that "investigations by the relevant authorities are ongoing to fully clarify all the circumstances of the incident."
