In response to the tragic news, the Iranian government declared a 40-day mourning period and seven days of nationwide holidays.
According to pro-government sources, the Ayatollah was at his workplace when his death occurred.
“The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic, and the popular militia will continue to protect the legacy of our leader and confront any internal and external threats, as well as take harsh measures against aggressors who have encroached on the Islamic homeland,” stated Iranian state television (IRIB).
According to IRIB, Ayatollah Khamenei died early on Sunday morning; however, authorities had previously denied reports of his death.
Additionally, it was reported that the Ayatollah's daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter also perished.
The attack by Israel and the USA on Iran began on February 28 with massive air and missile strikes on cities and military facilities in the country. Tehran responded to these actions by attacking Israeli and American military bases in several countries in the Middle East. In the first hours after the attacks began, several high-ranking Iranian officials and military personnel were killed. Soon after the operation, dubbed “Lion's Roar,” began, U.S. President Donald Trump made a statement.
