Nazbu Kalikova, a 60-year-old resident of the village of Uchkun in the Kadamjai district of the Batken region, has been dedicated to handicrafts for 48 years.

Despite having a disability of the second group and suffering from polyarthritis, Nazbu continues to earn a living by creating and selling a variety of knitted items.

“I study the reading of the Quran by myself. In my free time, I engage in handicrafts. All the products I create, I give to my teachers who educate me. I cannot walk far and can only move with support. The illness has tormented me for many years,” Kalikova shared.

She has devoted almost fifty years to her passion.

“I knit bags for the Quran, regular bags, jumpers, vests, phone cases, socks, and headwear. During the particularly difficult times of 1994-1995, I made clothes for the children of my relatives,” she recounts.

In those years, we used the wool of Angora goats for yarn. Now my younger sister, who works in Russia, sends me high-quality and soft threads, which I use. I also create small items for the home, such as teapot stands and phone cases.

My prices are quite affordable. Knitted children's jumpers cost from 500 soms, hats up to 300 soms. Adult clothing averages around 2000 soms. I sold a teapot stand for 100 soms and a phone case for 500 soms,” noted N. Kalikova.
