Nepal to Ban Ascents on Everest for Unprepared Tourists

In Nepal, a bill is under consideration that will tighten the conditions for climbing Everest. The upper house of parliament has already supported the initiative, and it will now be sent for a vote in the lower house before the elections scheduled for March 5.

According to the new initiative, climbing permits will only be granted to those climbers who have previously summited at least one peak in Nepal that is over 7,000 meters high. Requirements for mandatory insurance, age restrictions, and necessary experience are also being introduced.

Authorities explain the need for these measures due to the increasing number of unprepared tourists, overcrowding on popular routes, and environmental damage. Additionally, the bill includes the establishment of an environmental fund that will focus on cleaning up the Himalayas from accumulated waste.

After final adoption, the new law will come into effect within three months.
