FIFA President Gianni Infantino received Lebanese citizenship

In Beirut, FIFA President Gianni Infantino received a Lebanese passport, made possible by a decree from President Joseph Aoun.

This event is rare, as Lebanese law typically does not allow women to pass citizenship to foreign husbands or children. Infantino, who is married to Lebanese Lina al-Ashkar, expressed his affection for the country, stating: "I love Lebanon."

Since his appointment as FIFA president in 2016, Infantino, who also holds Italian and Swiss citizenship, has faced criticism for the decision to host World Cups in Russia and Qatar, as well as for defending Qatar in the context of human rights issues. Additionally, he is known to have close ties with Donald Trump, including the awarding of the FIFA Peace Prize.
