The situation regarding the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has become unstable just two weeks before the scheduled start date of the tournament.
The competition, organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is set to take place from July 5 to July 26, 2025, after the dates were changed from winter to summer. Morocco was supposed to host the tournament for the second consecutive time, but recent reports indicate possible difficulties in organizing it.
Luxolo September, head of CAF communications, stated that the confederation's leadership is closely monitoring the situation and will make an official statement soon.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe has previously emphasized the importance of the tournament and the necessity to hold it as planned, as this event is a key stage in the qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, which will take place in Brazil.
The current uncertainty has been sharply criticized in South Africa. Sports Minister Gert Oosthuizen stated that such fluctuations just days before the tournament starts are unacceptable and confirmed the country's readiness to host the competition on short notice.
The final tournament will feature 12 teams (instead of 16). It is worth noting that the current champion is the South African team, which won the final of the previous tournament in 2022 against Morocco with a score of 2:1. The leader in the number of titles in the history of the competition is the Nigerian team, which last time went home without any awards.
