At the 240th meeting of the World Athletics Council, held in Torun, Poland, before the 2026 World Athletics Championships, the cities hosting the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2028 and 2030 were announced. The capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, and the Indian state of Odisha were chosen by the association, as reported by Kazinform.

The selection of the venues for the world championships reflects the strategy of World Athletics to organize significant events in developing markets. This will provide Kazakhstan with the opportunity to elevate athletics to new heights.

Astana previously hosted the Asian Indoor Championships in 2023 and is also planning to hold stages of the World Indoor Tour Gold in 2024 and 2025.
