The Olympic Council of Asia has announced that the 2029 Asian Winter Games, originally scheduled to be held in Neom, will now take place in Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan.

As reported by DW, the decision to relocate is linked to the scaling back of several projects in Saudi Arabia due to rising costs and falling oil prices.

The President of the OCA, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, expressed confidence in the successful organization of the Games in Almaty, noting that the city has a rich history in winter sports and previously hosted the Asian Winter Games in 2011. The signing of the relocation document took place at the Winter Olympics in Milan.

It was previously reported that the year-round mountain resort of Trojena was planned to be used for the Games, with an estimated cost of 500 billion dollars. However, according to some sources, the actual cost of the resort could reach 8 trillion dollars. In Trojena, plans were made to build ski slopes, hotel complexes, and residential areas covering approximately 60 square kilometers. The resort is located at an altitude of 1500 to 2600 meters above sea level, where winter temperatures allow for the use of natural snow.
