On the first day of the Winter Olympic Games 2026 in Italy, February 7, acts of sabotage occurred on the railway, leading to significant delays in train services. It has been reported that the police's anti-terrorism unit has begun an investigation, as noted by DW.

According to information from Italian authorities, three acts of sabotage were recorded in the north of the country. As a result, high-speed and regional trains were delayed by up to 2.5 hours.

The first incident occurred before dawn near Pesaro, where a distribution board was set on fire. In Bologna, unknown individuals cut a cable used for measuring train speeds, and a primitive explosive device was found on the section between Bologna and Padua.

The Italian state railway company Ferrovie dello Stato reported the temporary closure of the station in Bologna, which is a key hub for high-speed trains. The company also stated that it rules out technical malfunctions as the cause of the incident.

In connection with these events, the anti-terrorism unit has joined the investigation. Law enforcement officials stated that all three incidents are interconnected; however, no group has claimed responsibility for what happened.

Bologna plays an important role in Italy's railway routes, connecting northern and southern regions, and is a key point for routes to cities hosting the 2026 Olympics, such as Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

By the end of the day, train services in the country began to recover. The Italian Ministry of Transport characterized the incident as a "serious case of sabotage."
