
The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the issue will be settled, adding that he explained to Trump the necessity of dividing ownership rights to the new bridge between the governments of Canada and the U.S. state of Michigan.
The construction of the bridge, named after the famous Canadian hockey player Gordie Howe, began in 2018 and was fully funded by the Canadian government in the amount of $4.7 billion. The bridge is expected to open in the coming months.
Previously, Donald Trump threatened to block the new route until Washington received "full compensation for everything" that was provided to Ottawa. Interestingly, the New York Times reported that American businessman Matt Moroun, whose family owns the Ambassador Bridge, met with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick just hours before Trump's statement.
