According to a statement from OpenAI, the company DeepSeek employs a so-called "distillation" method. This means that the Chinese developer uses the results of other AI models to train its systems. OpenAI claims that DeepSeek has found ways to bypass protective measures by masking its requests through third-party services and resorting to software code to automatically extract data from OpenAI models.

Furthermore, DeepSeek offers its services for free, which poses a threat to American companies that have invested significant resources in the development of AI technologies.

OpenAI has also expressed concerns about potential implications for national security. In particular, the DeepSeek chatbot reportedly limits its responses on topics that are sensitive to Chinese authorities. At the same time, copying technologies may result in protective mechanisms not being transferred, increasing the risk of abuse.

John Moolenaar, the head of the House of Representatives committee on China, emphasized that DeepSeek's actions fit into China's strategy of copying foreign technologies. Congressman Michael McCaul also noted that the successes of the Chinese company highlight the risks associated with supplying advanced chips to China.

U.S. authorities are investigating whether DeepSeek could have circumvented export restrictions by acquiring chips through third countries. It was previously reported that in the process of developing its models, the company may have used Nvidia equipment, including devices that were illegally imported into China.
